THE NOUVEAUX HONKIES Sunday, August 30, 2009 7:00 PM, Dinner service @ 5 PM $25 advance (add $3 for door sales) Originating from a small commercial fishing town, the Honkies started playing in a tiny cafe on Saturday nights. Their combination of blues, swing and early country soon swallowed the local crowd and this quartet exploded out of the gate recording two albums and leaving a trail of old tonk-style shows from Florida to the Northwest. They have a matchless sound and perform a blistering show with fluid guitar work, reverent vocals and a haunting violin, making them the discovery of the year. |

SLAID CLEAVES Friday, July 25, 2008, 7:00 PM, Dinner service @ 5 PM, BYOB $25 advance/$20 members (add $3 for door sales) Moody Mountain Barn, 100 Pork Hill Road, Wolfeboro, NH One of the finest singer-songwriters in Texas (a transplant from Maine!), Slaid Cleaves tells gorgeously compact stories in a voice packed with Texas trail dust. Orignally from small-town Maine, Slaid sure isn't running short on charm. His smooth southern drawl is somewhat affected, and while there's just enough twang to make it justifiably country, the substantial purity belongs to the traditions of folk music. His natural charisma comes more from his sensitivity to the stories he tells, his range of volume and intensity bringing the songs to life. |
